Platinum is his status
Stand aside AKA, Frank Casino and Cassper Nyovest – Middelburg’s Freeman Phafudi (22) doesn’t settle for silver status or even gold, for this Mhluzi muso it’s PlatinumStatus or nothing at all!
Born and bred in Mhluzi and growing up on the nectar of the Klein Olifants River, Freeman was destined to become a Springbok rugby player, but after breaking his ankle in Grade 9 during his first year in Kanonkop High’s first rugby team, he had a lot of idle time at hand to immerse himself in music.
After receiving a devastating blow from his doctor who told him that his ankle had been damaged permanently and rugby was off the table, it was bey bey Freeman, hello PlatinumStatus.
He produced his first single titled Spice at age 15 using Fruity Loops Production software.
The single quickly became a hit among his friends who promoted their friend with shares and downloads on YouTube.
Astounded by the support PS realized he had some serious status and a social media star was born – Facebook, Instagram Soundcloud, the world was his oyster now.
Though he believes his spiritual calling to be that of musician, PlatinumStatus also views himself as a successful businessman and entrepreneur.
He runs his own production company and says he would love to branch out and give other upcoming musicians a chance to record.
The flamboyant PlatinumStatus says he loves to be the centre of attention all the time – “What muso doesn’t,” he defends what some perceive as arrogance, but he believes is a healthy dose of self confidence.
“I’m seldom reserved, if you see me in the distance I want you to think ‘that boy is dope,’ I prefer not to blend in”.
PS says 2018 is going to be his year of glory when he drops his first ever music video on Channel O, MTV and Africa Magic on November 22. PlatinumStatus believes the video of single Trap House featuring the UK’s Jolly Black Bastard will be received very well and may possibly become a cross continental hit. The music video will be followed by the release of a mixed tape in January 2018.
PlatinumStatus sees his music as a mixture of Party, Rap and Rock. He says he’s a die hard fan of Prime Circle who made it big internationally, and whose members also hail from Middelburg and eMalahleni.
“There’s no stopping us,” PS says. Being the youngest of three, PlatinumStatus says his love for music was also influenced deeply by his brother and sister.
PlatinumStatus says he will perform at the Rag Party in eMalahleni in October.
He can be followed on YouTube and Instagram under the handle PlatinumStatus_ZA and on Facebook under PlatinumStatus_SA.
If you see him in the streets, be sure to make friends, he will very soon be SA’s own JayZ!
